About Alternative Racing Engines, Marine Power and Drivetrains

A race engine means something different depending on where you unload.

At an offshore race, it may be one half of a twin-engine package feeding high-performance drives. At Lake Havasu, it may be a PWC engine sitting beside a pump and ECU package. In a snocross trailer, the conversation includes clutching and calibration. At Roswell, an air-racing engine may come with logbooks and time records. In a Figure 8 pit, it may be the spare small block everyone hopes stays strapped to the tire rack all night.

Shop complete or substantially complete race engines, transmissions, gearboxes and major powertrain or propulsion assemblies for alternative motorsports.

Find Race Engines and Major Drivetrain Assemblies

Listings may include:

  • Offshore and powerboat racing engines
  • Complete marine sterndrive packages
  • Race outboard engines
  • Hydroplane and inboard race engines
  • Drag-boat and jet-boat engines
  • Complete PWC race engines
  • Major PWC propulsion packages
  • Snowmobile race engines
  • Complete snowmobile clutch and drive assemblies
  • Hill-climb race engines and sequential gearboxes
  • Land-speed race engines and transmissions
  • Air-racing piston engines and performance powerplants
  • Figure 8 and demolition derby engines
  • Swamp buggy and mud-racing engines
  • Mega-truck and monster-truck engines
  • Big-rig racing engines and transmissions
  • Racing lawn mower engines and major driveline packages
  • Complete transmissions, gearboxes, transfer cases and differentials sold as major assemblies

The dividing line is simple: if the buyer is purchasing a substantially complete power unit or major drive assembly, it belongs here. If the buyer is purchasing a piston, clutch disc, propeller, impeller, gear, axle shaft or other replaceable component, use Racing Parts.

Marine Racing Power Is Its Own World

Boat racers do not buy an engine in isolation. They think about the hull, drive, propeller, cooling, fuel load, class rules and how the entire package behaves on the water.

A current offshore program may use large-displacement race engines paired with matched transmissions and drives. Inboard hydroplanes use very different combinations. Stock and Modified Outboard racers work with smaller outboard packages. F1H2O-style tunnel boats live in a high-performance outboard environment. Drag boats may use extreme automotive-derived power in a marine application where cooling, fuel delivery and driveline safety matter just as much as the dyno sheet.

Before buying marine power, ask about:

  • Engine builder and manufacturer
  • Displacement and configuration
  • Claimed output and rpm range
  • Fuel requirement
  • Naturally aspirated, supercharged or turbocharged setup
  • Engine hours
  • Time since rebuild or refresh
  • Freshwater or saltwater history
  • Cooling configuration
  • Oil system
  • Ignition and ECU
  • Wiring and controls included
  • Transmission or drive included
  • Gear ratio where relevant
  • Exhaust included
  • Dyno or build documentation
  • Known failures or repairs
  • Crating and freight requirements

A complete sterndrive or outboard race engine can belong here. A propeller sold by itself belongs in Other Racing Parts.

PWC and Snowmobile Power

PWC race power is highly platform-specific. A Sea-Doo, Yamaha or Kawasaki race build can depend on the exact engine generation, ECU, fuel, supercharger or turbo system where applicable, cooling, pump compatibility and class rules.

For a PWC engine, confirm exact platform, stand-up or runabout use, internal modifications, ECU and tune, forced-induction hardware where applicable, exhaust, cooling, hours since build and what pump or drive components are included.

Snowmobile racers think in engine families, clutching, calibration, chaincase and race discipline. A snocross engine may be sold with a different supporting package than an oval, cross-country, vintage or drag sled engine.

Ask what is included, how many races or hours are on it, who built it and what the seller would service before installation.

Hill-Climb and Land-Speed Power

Hill climb rewards acceleration, response, cooling, gearing and reliability over a course that can change dramatically in elevation and temperature. Pikes Peak is 12.42 miles with 156 turns, and purpose-built cars can combine extreme aero with engines and gearboxes chosen specifically for that environment.

A hill-climb engine or gearbox listing should identify the car, class, event history, power level, fuel, boost where applicable, cooling strategy, gear ratios, differential and service life.

Land-speed racing creates another set of priorities. Bonneville cars may be built around specific SCTA/BNI body and engine classes. If an engine is sold as part of a record-setting combination, the seller should identify the class, event, date, speed and supporting documentation rather than relying on a vague Bonneville motor description.

Air-Racing Engines

Air-racing powerplants require especially careful documentation.

The National Championship Air Races brings together very different aircraft, from Formula 1 and Biplane racers to T-6, Sport, Jet and Unlimited classes. For a piston aircraft engine, buyers should review:

  • Engine manufacturer and model
  • Serial information
  • Total time where applicable
  • Time since overhaul
  • Time since top overhaul or major service
  • Maintenance and build records
  • Racing modifications
  • Compression and inspection history
  • Fuel and ignition configuration
  • Accessories included
  • Propeller compatibility
  • Damage or overheat history

A seller's air-racing history does not make an engine airworthy, approved for installation or legal for a particular race class. Buyers should involve appropriately qualified aviation professionals.

Figure 8, Derby, Mud and Grassroots Power

The grassroots end of this category is less glamorous and often more practical.

Figure 8 teams may be hunting for a complete engine and transmission package they can install between events. Derby builders may want a proven combination with simple cooling and serviceable parts. Swamp buggy and mud racers may need substantial torque, durable transmissions and drive systems that survive shock loads. Racing mower builders can buy complete small-engine race builds while sourcing individual rods, flywheels and other components separately in Parts.

Monster-truck engines can be listed when the powertrain is the actual product, but this is one segment among marine, snow, air, hill-climb, land-speed and grassroots applications.

Selling a Race Engine or Drivetrain

Strong listings should identify:

  • Racing discipline
  • Engine, transmission or drivetrain type
  • Builder and manufacturer
  • Model or engine family
  • Displacement
  • Fuel
  • Induction
  • Seller-reported output
  • Build or refresh date
  • Hours, races, runs or passes
  • Dyno or test documentation
  • Transmission or gearbox included
  • Differential, transfer case or major drive included
  • Marine drive or outboard configuration
  • ECU, ignition and controls included
  • Cooling, exhaust and fuel components included
  • Known failures, repairs or damage
  • Current condition
  • Asking price
  • Seller location
  • Freight and crating options

Describe new, fresh, rebuilt, refreshed, long block, complete, transmission-only and similar terms precisely. Buyers should not have to guess what arrives on the pallet.
